Dee Wright

RUNNER-UP: Dee Wright, The Hairforce – Lice Assassins, Primrose Hill, London

Dee, who is mum to Mia (12) and Ines (10), founded The Hairforce in 2006 with the aim of making a real difference to parents, children and women. The company offers a unique service which specialises in the elimination of head lice and nits.

The treatment is carried out by hand without chemicals, so it is safe, natural and environmentally friendly. Many people are unaware that lice and nits can become immune to products, but cannot become immune to hand clearing.

Equipped to clear nits and lice with specialist lice hoovers and lighting as well as magnifying visors, nit combs and tweezers, Dee’s team of highly trained and skilled ‘Lice Assassins’ offer nits and head lice nowhere to hide. While they clear the problem, the child sits in a specialist massage chair and is entertained throughout the procedure with the latest computer games and DVDs.

According to Dee, 80 per cent of the products parents buy to combat lice and nits are ineffective, yet despite this they each spend £30 a year* in desperation to get rid of the problem.

Dee has identified a gap in an abundant market - according to the Yell.com Mum Magnates report 12.5 per cent of women start their business in childcare or a related industry**.

The Hairforce is an innovative solution which is not only effective, but also relieves the pressure and stigma of head lice and nits for children and their parents.

Dee believes The Hairforce successfully re-instates excluded children back into school quickly which stops any potential bullying as the day after the first clearing many children have no visible evidence left of the infestation.
As well as bringing an ethical solution to a real problem, The Hairforce operates a powerful social employment model offering mothers part-time work that is truly flexible and understanding to them. The Hairforce currently employs 11 women and Dee hopes to take advantage of the gap in the market by franchising her business throughout the UK.

I set up my own company last year and it's certainly been a rollacoaster of a ride. I loved Jane Hopkins comment. We are organising a fantastic free family event called Brighton Baby Expo in June working with Jo Jo Maman Bebe and Gymboree and welcoming hundreds of exhibitors. We are featuring a special seminar on the challenges 'mumtrepreneurs' face with the Mums in Biz Founder and Dragons Den survivor Julie White of Truly Madly Baby. We would love to welcome any biz mums along ! brightonbabyexpo.co.uk
