Susan Moore

Finalist: Susan Moore, Warrington, Cheshire

In 2004, Susan devised an idea for a children's party business that, in addition to party planning, would deliver party entertainment with a team of trained hosts. Wanting flexibility in her career to look after her three children, Susan left her role as a sales director to launch her business - Party Crew - the following Spring. Since then, Party Crew has expanded to become a franchise which employs more than 26 women across the country, enabling them to combine motherhood with running their own business.

Susan’s Tips
  • Spend time getting up to speed with the internet, it's such a valuable business tool. Time spent learning more about the workings of the web prior to setting up business systems, may save a huge amount of time and money at a later date
  • Plan, plan and plan again. Spending time putting together a strong business plan at the outset will help mums to map out the direction of their business including timeframes and goals
  • It sounds obvious but thoroughly check that the business will make a profit. Building a business is rather like building a house, it can take longer and cost more than you originally calculated so include a 'contingency fund' to help you meet any unexpected expenses

Tip on filling out the application form:
  • The ‘Inspirational Business of the Year’ award can provide a great platform for your business in terms of credibility, raising the profile of your business and making some valuable contacts.   To give yourself the best chance of succeeding with your nomination, spend some time completing the application form. Consider each question carefully, write out the answers on a piece of paper, get some input from friends and family and above all else don't be afraid to blow your own trumpet. If you're doing something great with your business then shout about it!  Good Luck.
We hope you find the information on this site helpful and that it encourages you to develop your ideas.

Your Comments

To all business mums reading this, running a business around the madness of family life can be hard and isolating, but you're not alone.

Think about that when you're working late into the twilight hours after the kids are asleep...you'll fine a whole army of mum's surgically attached to their laptops...building their empires!

Good luck to us all, and enjoy it!
