Tips for new business women

Respond
"I've been in business for a year now, running Generation One magazine - a local parenting magazine in Hull and East Yorkshire. I started the magazine because I had no support network after the birth of my son, Charlie and I realised lots of other Mums are like me - in their 30s, away from their families and with their friends working full time.

My advice would be to not be afraid of being yourself, warts and all. I started off thinking I had to wear a suit and act like a candidate for The Apprentice. I've learned that respect for others and good relationships lead to good sales - not any magic hard sell formula. The magazine has gone from strength to strength because other people recognise what I feel. Sometimes you need to stand up and be counted. It's scary, but it's not all about numbers, running a people business is incredibly valuable too. "

"I set up my own company last year and it's certainly been a rollacoaster of a ride. I loved Jane Hopkins comment. We are organising a fantastic free family event called Brighton Baby Expo in June working with Jo Jo Maman Bebe and Gymboree and welcoming hundreds of exhibitors. We are featuring a special seminar on the challenges 'mumtrepreneurs' face with the Mums in Biz Founder and Dragons Den survivor Julie White of Truly Madly Baby. We would love to welcome any biz mums along ! brightonbabyexpo.co.uk"

Re: working mums

"I'm just about to launch a new business selling children's furniture which I've been working tirelessly on for a couple of years now and have made alliances with 2 other mums who make gifts and clothing, were all working towards a work life balance, i've juggled a full time job through the day and new business in the evening, but the responsibility of being a mum still comes first, homework has to be done and school events need volunteers etc etc...I believe working mums make better descisions because they can't afford the time to get it wrong, unlike many companies that have long meetings that go nowhere, you can tell i'm speaking from experience!

Networking is the key to success

Respond
"To all business mums reading this, running a business around the madness of family life can be hard and isolating, but you're not alone.

Think about that when you're working late into the twilight hours after the kids are asleep...you'll fine a whole army of mum's surgically attached to their laptops...building their empires!

Good luck to us all, and enjoy it!

Jane"
